Learning ‘Sit’

The ‘Sit’ command is a great first command to teach your puppy. It's relatively simple to learn and helps your puppy develop good manners when interacting with others. Once mastered, your puppy should stop whatever he's doing and sit on command. Brilliant!

  • Start by attaching a 6ft leash. This stops your puppy from wandering off too far and helps you keep control.
  • Hold the leash in one hand and a treat in the other. Let your puppy know that you have a treat, but do not give it to him.
  • Get your puppy’s attention. Let him lick the treat in your hand.
  • Crouch down directly in front of your puppy. Say ‘Sit’ and then move the treat up and back over the puppy’s head, luring him into the ‘Sit’ position.
  • If this doesn’t work after a few tries, gently pull upwards on the leash and push down on his bottom. You should never force your puppy.
  • When he gets it right, say ‘Yes’ to reinforce the command.
  • Release him with an ‘Ok’ and give him some praise.
  • Practice this exercise a few times a day for about 5-10 minutes at a time.
