Learning ‘Come’

The ‘Come’ command is really useful and actually has the potential to get you and your puppy out of some sticky situations. Puppies learn quickly and this command is just perfect for them. It’s fun, simple, and important, not to mention very rewarding too. When you say the command your dog should stop what he’s doing, look up, and run towards you, all on the first time you say ‘Come’.

  • Say ‘Come’, and then back a few feet away from your puppy. Following you is actually a normal behaviour for your puppy, so he should come to you happily and fast.
  • If it doesn’t quite work, just try again. He’ll get there. Make sure you always stay in his line of sight.
  • When he gets it right, say ‘Yes’ to reinforce the command and praise him.
  • Practice this exercise a few times a day for about 5-10 minutes at a time.
