Learning ‘Stay’

Teaching your dog to ‘Stay’ can be incredibly useful. It’s best to learn the ‘Sit’ command first, as this is effectively an extension of that technique.

  • Start by attaching a 6ft leash. This stops your puppy from wandering off too far and helps you keep control.
  • Get your puppy in the ‘Sit’ position. Then move around him and stand on his right side.
  • Get your puppy’s attention. Let him lick the treat in your hand.
  • Say ‘Stay’ and put the palm of your left hand in front of your puppy’s face.
  • Reward him if he stays, then move around in front of your puppy so you are facing him. Make sure you keep your hand firmly in his line of sight.
  • Slowly take a few steps back, while reinforcing ‘Stay’. If he follows, just start again.
  • When he gets it right, say ‘Yes’ to reinforce the command.
  • Return to his right side and release him with an ‘Ok’. Praise and reward him. Alternate between treats and praise for your puppy’s good behaviour.
  • Practice this exercise a few times a day for about 5-10 minutes at a time. Slowly increase the time you expect him to ‘Stay,’ and the distance between you and your puppy. Puppies learn fast as long as you remain positive and consistently reinforce good behaviour.
