Maude - 1983 Inductee

PICTOU COUNTY, NOVA SCOTIA

MAUDE, a German Shepherd, owned by Deborah Johnston and Bernard Chisholm, saved a three-year-old girl from drowning in the frigid waters of Pictou Harbour. Gripping the child’s overalls in her teeth, Maude pulled the child out of the deep water.

At Purina, we celebrate the unique and powerful bond between pets and people through the Purina Animal Hall of Fame. This program, the longest-running of its kind in Canada, honours animals who have demonstrated exceptional courage, loyalty, and love.

These pets have gone beyond being companions—they’ve become heroes. From saving lives to offering emotional support, each inductee has made a significant impact on the lives of those around them. Their stories are a testament to the strength of the human-animal connection and the incredible role pets play in our lives.

We encourage you to explore the stories of past inductees and consider nominating a pet who has made a difference. To learn more about the Purina Animal Hall of Fame or to submit a nomination for the upcoming year, please click here and complete our form. Help us honour the animals who continue to inspire and uplift us.
