Checker Day Brings the Purina Spirit to Life
For generations, Checker Day has been a beloved tradition at Nestlé Purina PetCare. Dating back to the 1940s, the day celebrates something at the heart of our culture: camaraderie, community, and a shared sense of purpose.
While the iconic checkerboard shirts have, for some, been replaced by red Purina T-shirts, the meaning behind the tradition remains unchanged. Checker Day is a reminder that no matter our role, location, or team, we are united by a common purpose and stronger when we come together.
On September 2, employees gathered at our Mississauga headquarters to celebrate this special tradition. While we missed our colleagues working remotely and those based in Innisfail and Caledonia, they were very much part of the day in spirit.
A Day of Connection, Friendly Competition and Giving Back
Checker Day provided an opportunity to step away from our day-to-day work, connect with colleagues, and make a positive impact in our community.
The day began with employees creating cat and dog toys that were donated to the Hamilton/Burlington SPCA and the Humane Society of Oakville, Milton & Halton. Through this hands-on activity, teams worked together to support the well-being of pets awaiting their forever homes.
Employees also brought their competitive spirit to a charity relay in the dog park, where teamwork, determination, and plenty of laughter were on full display. The winning team earned the opportunity to select a charity to receive a donation from Purina.
Of course, no Checker Day would be complete without sharing a meal together. Throughout the day, employees gathered to connect, celebrate, and reflect on what makes the Purina culture so special.

At its core, Checker Day is about more than a tradition. It is a celebration of the people who make Purina a great place to work and the values that guide us every day.
From giving back to our communities to supporting one another as colleagues, Checker Day reminds us of the power of teamwork and the importance of staying connected to our purpose.
