Animal Hall of Fame Award Recipient: "I am going to die." Dog Rescues Canadian Hiker from Galloping Grizzly Bear

Craig Campbell was going on a routine hike with his Doberman Night on May 2nd, 2024 in Cochrane, Alberta when what began as a peaceful outing, turned into a life-or-death moment.

“We were both staring into the bush trying to spot the movement we detected. At first I figured it was likely deer, elk or moose as we encountered them frequently,” says the 71 year-old. “I was glued to the area and no longer seeing Night when the grizzly exploded out of the forest in a full gallop!”

Craig says he threw down his walking stick and tried to reach for his bear spray but quickly realized he wasn’t going to get it in time. This is when he thought to himself, I’m going to die.

“Still eyes on the bear, I saw Night leap in front, crouched and looking savage,” says Craig about his now 11-year-old Doberman.

Craig says that when Night came to his rescue, the bear reared up on its hind legs in a frightening display, triggering a tense standoff between dog, man, and grizzly. The moment gave Craig just enough time to retrieve his bear spray—but he didn’t end up needing it, as the bear fled.

The hiker shares how incredibly grateful he is that his companion Night jumped in for the rescue.

“We are virtually inseparable and what makes him special is not his Schutzhund [tracking, obedience, protection] awards but the fact he is my best buddy!”

A heartfelt congratulations to Night, a true hero and a deserving recipient of the Purina Animal Hall of Fame Award.
